Sepsivac

Sepsivac is an immunomodulatory pharmaceutical compound developed by Cadila Pharmaceuticals in collaboration with India's Council of Scientific and Industrial Research under the New Millennium Indian Technology Leadership Initiative program, intended to address gram-negative sepsis and septic shock. Its active component is heat-killed Mycobacterium w, a non-pathogenic mycobacterial strain, with the generic name Mycobacterium w (heat killed). Rather than targeting a pathogen directly, Sepsivac works by regulating the body's own immune response during sepsis, a condition in which the body generates a cascade of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines that can themselves damage organs; by modulating this cytokine response, the drug has been shown in trials to reduce mortality among sepsis patients. It received approval from India's Drug Controller General for management of sepsis and septic shock, and has demonstrated a safety profile with no systematic adverse effects reported, allowing it to be used alongside other critical care treatments.
