Scabies is a contagious skin condition caused by infestation with the microscopic mite Sarcoptes scabiei, which burrows into the outer layer of skin. The infestation produces intense itching, typically worse at night, and a pimple-like rash concentrated in skin folds such as between the fingers and around the waistline. It spreads readily through prolonged skin-to-skin contact.
