In 1880 the German pathologist Karl Joseph Eberth described a bacillus he suspected of causing typhoid fever, found in the tissue of patients who had died of the disease. His identification was confirmed in 1884 when Georg Gaffky succeeded in growing the organism in pure culture, and for a time the bacterium was known as Eberth's bacillus or the Gaffky-Eberth bacillus in recognition of the two men's work. The organism is classified today as Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi.
