The Francis Crick Institute is a biomedical research centre in Camden, central London, established in 2010 and opened in 2016 next to St Pancras railway station. Described as the biggest single biomedical laboratory in Europe, it employs around one thousand five hundred staff, including some one thousand two hundred and fifty scientists, on an annual budget exceeding one hundred million pounds, working to understand how disease develops and to create new treatments, diagnostics, and prevention strategies for conditions including cancer, heart disease, stroke, infections, and neurodegenerative illness. The institute is a partnership among six founding organizations, Cancer Research UK, Imperial College London, King's College London, the Medical Research Council, University College London, and the Wellcome Trust. Nobel laureate Paul Nurse served as its first director and chief executive from 2011 until 2025, when Edith Heard succeeded him.
