Research Institute of Molecular Pathology

The Research Institute of Molecular Pathology, known by its German initials IMP, was founded in Vienna, Austria in 1985 as a joint venture between the pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim and the biotechnology firm Genentech; Boehringer Ingelheim bought out Genentech's share in 1993 and has funded the institute's operating budget ever since. Based on the Vienna Biocenter campus, the IMP conducts curiosity-driven basic research across roughly 15 independent research groups working in molecular and cellular biology, structural biology, gene expression, stem cell biology, and cancer immunology. Its staff of around 280 people, drawn from some 40 countries and working in English, have published more than 2,200 research papers between 1985 and 2021 and have won 24 European Research Council grants since 2007. The institute moved into a new 15,000-square-metre building in late 2016, formally opened on March 1, 2017.
