Broad Institute

The Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard is an independently governed nonprofit biomedical and genomic research organization in Cambridge, Massachusetts, formed through a partnership among MIT, Harvard University, and five Harvard teaching hospitals. It conducts basic and translational research in genomics, bioinformatics, and biomedicine through research programs covering cancer, genetics, genome biology, chemical biology, metabolism, infectious disease, and psychiatry, drawing on core faculty and hundreds of associate members from its partner institutions. The institute houses one of the largest genome sequencing centers in the world, and during the COVID-19 pandemic it processed roughly one in twenty of the nation's COVID-19 tests. It was established in 2004 with a founding gift from philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad, followed by hundreds of millions of dollars in further donations from the same family and others.
