Ischemic compression is a manual therapy technique in which sustained pressure is applied to deliberately restrict blood flow to an area of the body, producing a resurgence of local circulation once the pressure is released. It is most commonly applied to myofascial trigger points, a use known as trigger point therapy, where a therapist applies enough sustained pressure to cause a tolerable amount of discomfort and gradually increases the pressure as the pain eases.
