Gray baby syndrome is a rare but serious, sometimes fatal, condition that occurs in newborn infants after the antibiotic chloramphenicol accumulates in their bodies. Newborns are especially vulnerable because their livers cannot yet process the drug efficiently, allowing it to build up to toxic levels.
