Perinatal Asphyxia

Conditions Originating in the Perinatal Period

Perinatal asphyxia, also known as birth asphyxia, is a condition in which a newborn is deprived of adequate oxygen for long enough during the birth process to cause physical harm, most often to the brain. It remains a significant cause of illness and death among newborns worldwide and reflects a failure of the infant to establish and sustain adequate breathing on its own after delivery. The oxygen deficit that produces the condition can begin before birth, from around the 28th week of pregnancy onward, rather than only during labor itself.
