Retinopathy of prematurity is a disease of the eye affecting prematurely born babies, in which the blood vessels of the retina do not develop normally. It primarily affects premature babies who receive neonatal intensive care, especially when supplemental oxygen therapy is used to support breathing. Its manifestations span a spectrum from incomplete development of retinal blood vessels through pathological retinal blood vessel growth and retinal scarring to retinal detachment, and outcomes range from spontaneous resolution to blindness.
