Autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type 1, or APS-1, is a subtype of autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome that causes the dysfunction of multiple endocrine glands through autoimmunity. It is a genetic disorder inherited in an autosomal recessive fashion, caused by a defect in the AIRE gene located on chromosome 21, which normally confers immune tolerance.
