Autovampirism

Mental and Behavioural Disorders

Autovampirism, also written auto-vampirism, is a form of vampirism in which a person drinks their own blood, typically as a form of sexual gratification. As a mental disorder it is also called autohemophagia, a term built from the Greek words for self, blood and eating. It is closely related to vampirism proper, but the two differ in character: vampirism is described as a sadistic act, while autovampirism falls on the masochistic side. Most practitioners who drink their own blood also engage in self-harm in order to obtain it. The atlas records the condition as a description of what clinical and popular sources say about it, not as guidance, and nothing here is medical advice.
