Cognitive disengagement syndrome

Mental and Behavioural Disorders

Cognitive disengagement syndrome (CDS) is a condition marked by developmentally inappropriate, impairing and persistent decoupling of attention from the surrounding context, together with resulting hypoactivity. People with CDS appear foggy, spacey and prone to staring blankly, mental confusion, absent-mindedness and maladaptive daydreaming, alongside slow or sedentary movement. It is distinct from ADHD: ADHD arises from deficient executive functioning and self-regulation so that attention, once engaged, cannot be sustained, while CDS involves problems in arousal and initially engaging attention. CDS can occur alone or alongside ADHD, responds poorly to methylphenidate, and may respond better to atomoxetine or lisdexamfetamine.
