Health outcomes for adults born prematurely are the long-term effects on people born before 37 weeks of gestation. The source notes that they are related to, but distinct from, low birth weight, and that they arise from genetic predisposition, conditions in pregnancy and childbirth, the neonatal care received and the home environment. Adults born preterm have higher all-cause mortality, 1.2 to 1.6 times in early to mid adulthood and 1.9 to 4.0 times for those born at 22 to 27 weeks, and carry greater risks of cardiovascular, endocrine, metabolic, respiratory, renal, neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders.
