Cord colitis syndrome is a diarrheal illness affecting recipients of umbilical cord blood transplants, causing granulomatous inflammation of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract that responds to antimicrobial treatment including metronidazole. First described in 2011, a 2013 sequencing study identified a newly discovered bacterium, Bradyrhizobium enterica, in biopsy samples from two patients, though later studies showing that Bradyrhizobium species are common laboratory reagent contaminants have cast doubt on that connection.
