Dysbiosis is a disruption to a microbiome that produces an imbalance in its microbiota, changes in their functional makeup and metabolic activity, or a shift in where they are found. In the human body, communities such as the skin, gut or vaginal flora can become deranged when species that normally dominate grow underrepresented while species usually kept in check increase to fill the gap. Because it is thought to play a role in a range of diseases, dysbiosis has drawn growing research interest in how it might be counteracted, and a comparable imbalance can affect the microbes of the plant rhizosphere, harming plant health; the condition is most commonly reported in the gastrointestinal tract or the plant rhizosphere.
