Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor

Neoplasms

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors are the most common mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract, arising in the smooth muscle pacemaker interstitial cells of Cajal or similar cells. They are defined by mutations in the KIT gene in about 85 percent of cases, the PDGFRA gene in about 10 percent, or more rarely BRAF kinase, and 95 percent stain positively for KIT. About two thirds occur in the stomach, where they have a lower malignant potential than tumors found elsewhere in the gastrointestinal tract.
