Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas, an organ that produces digestive enzymes and hormones including insulin. It occurs in acute and chronic forms: the acute form appears suddenly, often with severe abdominal pain, while the chronic form develops gradually and can permanently damage the organ's structure and function. Its most common causes are gallstones and long-term heavy alcohol use.
