Post-LASIK ectasia is a condition similar to keratoconus in which the cornea begins to bulge forwards at a variable time after corneal laser eye surgery, whether LASIK, PRK or SMILE. Although the outcome looks like keratoconus, the physiological processes appear to be different. The visible changes in the basal epithelial cells and in the anterior and posterior keratocytes that are linked with keratoconus were not observed in post-LASIK ectasia, which is why the two are treated as related but distinct conditions.
