Epidermolysis bullosa is a group of rare medical conditions that result in easy blistering of the skin and mucous membranes, with blisters occurring from minor trauma or friction and typically painful. Its severity ranges from mild to fatal, and the inherited form is rare, with a prevalence of about 8.2 per million live births in the United States. Those with mild cases may not develop symptoms until they begin to crawl or walk in early childhood, and complications can include esophageal narrowing, squamous cell skin cancer, and the need for amputations.
