Intertrigo, sometimes called skin fold dermatitis, is an inflammatory rash that develops within folds of skin, most often under the breasts, between the buttocks, in the armpits, and between the fingers or toes. It develops where moisture, friction, and exposure to sweat, urine, or feces cause the skin to break down, and the affected skin is more vulnerable than intact skin to secondary infection by bacteria such as Corynebacterium minutissimum, fungi such as Candida albicans, or viruses. It is more common in warm, humid conditions and in people with weakened immune systems, including children, older adults, and the immunocompromised, and people with urinary incontinence or reduced mobility face a higher risk because of prolonged skin contact with moisture. Its severity tracks closely with the surrounding humidity and a person's overall immune status rather than with age on its own.
