Encephalitozoonosis is a parasitic disease caused by the microsporidian Encephalitozoon cuniculi, which mainly affects rabbits in Europe, with other strains causing disease in Old World mice and canines. It occurs mostly in immunocompromised animals and is a potential zoonosis, though it can also occur, very rarely, in immunocompromised humans. The disease was first described by Wright and Craighead in 1922.
