Hemispatial neglect is a neuropsychological condition that follows damage to one hemisphere of the brain, producing a deficit in attention and awareness toward the side of space opposite the damaged hemisphere. A person with the condition is unable to properly process or perceive stimuli on the contralesional side of their own body or their surrounding environment, even though the relevant sensory pathways may be intact. The neglect is most often contralateral to the site of brain damage, though rarer cases of neglect on the same side as the damage have also been documented.
