Hopkins syndrome is a neurological disorder first reported in 1974 whose cause has not been established, though its association with asthma exacerbations has led to suspicion that the viral infection triggering the respiratory attack is also implicated in the paralysis that follows. Herpes simplex virus type I DNA has been found in the cerebrospinal fluid of at least one diagnosed patient, and in several other cases antibody titers for echovirus, enterovirus, coxsackievirus and poliovirus were specifically tested and found negative, while one reported case found a Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection instead.
