Sleep inversion, or sleep-wake inversion, is a reversal of ordinary sleeping tendencies, in which a person replaces diurnal habits with nocturnal ones, becoming active at night and sleeping during the day. Common symptoms include persistent wakefulness during nighttime hours and excessive sleepiness during the day. Sleep-wake inversion is itself an individual symptom rather than a condition on its own, and it can result from many causes, most commonly circadian rhythm disorders and encephalopathies.
