Amenorrhea is the absence of a menstrual period in a female who has reached reproductive age. Physiological states of amenorrhea are most commonly seen during pregnancy and lactation, and in a woman or girl of reproductive age who is not on birth control, its presence outside those states signals that menstruation is not occurring.
