Balanitis is inflammation of the glans penis; the related condition balanoposthitis occurs when the foreskin is also affected. Signs include small red erosions as the first sign, redness of the foreskin and penis, rashes on the penile head, foul-smelling discharge, and pain. The inflammation can stem from irritation by environmental substances, certain medications, physical trauma, and bacterial, viral, or fungal infection; it is less common in circumcised males, and either insufficient or excessive hygiene can contribute.
