Gestational, or incidental, thrombocytopenia is a condition that commonly affects pregnant women, involving a platelet count dropping below 150,000 per microliter from the normal range of 150,000 to 400,000 per microliter, for reasons that remain under ongoing research. Thrombocytopenia affects approximately 7 to 10 percent of pregnant women, and of that group roughly 70 to 80 percent have the gestational form, which is a disorder similar to, and difficult to differentiate from, immune thrombocytopenia.
