A disorder in marine and freshwater gastropod mollusks in which females develop male sexual characteristics such as a penis and vas deferens, driven chiefly by exposure to organotin pollutants, especially tributyltin used in antifouling ship paints. Unlike true intersex conditions involving ambiguous gonads, imposex superimposes male genitalia onto an otherwise functional female reproductive system, often causing sterility and population decline in affected species.
