Mullerian agenesis, also known as vaginal agenesis or Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuester-Hauser syndrome, is a birth defect in which the Mullerian ducts fail to develop, leaving a female without a uterus and with a variably underdeveloped upper vagina, while secondary sexual characteristics and hormone levels remain normal. It affects about 1 in 4,500 females, accounts for roughly 15 percent of primary amenorrhea cases, and is usually discovered at puberty when menstruation does not begin.
