Chikungunya is an infection caused by the chikungunya virus and is spread to people through the bite of an infected mosquito. Its most common symptoms are fever and joint pain, typically beginning four to eight days after the bite, with the joint pain sometimes described as severe; other possible symptoms include headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, and rash. Most people recover within about a week, though for some the joint pain can persist for months or years, and the very young, older adults, and people with other health conditions face a higher risk of severe disease.
