Chordoma

Neoplasms

Chordoma is a rare, slow growing cancer that arises from cellular remnants of the notochord in the bones of the skull base and spine. Its notochordal origin is supported by the location of the tumors, their immunohistochemical staining patterns, expression of the brachyury protein, and the fact that notochordal cells are preferentially left behind in the clivus and sacrococcygeal regions as the rest of the notochord regresses during fetal development.
