O'nyong'nyong Fever

Infectious and Parasitic Diseases

O'nyong'nyong fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease caused by the O'nyong'nyong virus, first isolated in 1959 during a large outbreak in Uganda that resembled dengue fever. The virus is a togavirus of the genus Alphavirus, closely related to the chikungunya and Igbo Ora viruses, and its name comes from a Nilotic language of Uganda and Sudan meaning weakening of the joints, a reference to the joint pain the disease causes.
