Yaws is a chronic bacterial infection of the skin, bone, and cartilage caused by a bacterium closely related to the one that causes syphilis, though it is not sexually transmitted. It spreads through direct skin contact with fluid from an infected person's sores, most often among children in warm, humid, tropical regions, beginning with a skin lesion that can be followed by bone and joint damage if left untreated. It can be cured with a single dose of antibiotic, and its eradication is a stated public health goal.
