Alcohol Use Disorder

Mental and Behavioural Disorders

Alcohol use disorder is the continued drinking of alcohol despite an inability to manage the problems that drinking causes, with some definitions additionally requiring evidence of physical dependence and withdrawal. Problematic alcohol use has been documented since the earliest historical records, reflecting its long presence across human societies. The World Health Organization estimated that 283 million people worldwide had an alcohol use disorder as of 2016, making it one of the most widespread substance use conditions globally.
