Hoffmann syndrome is a rare form of hypothyroid myopathy, a muscle disorder that arises from an underactive thyroid. It is not to be confused with Werdnig-Hoffmann disease, which is a type of spinal muscular atrophy. The syndrome was first documented in 1897 by Johann Hoffmann and its symptoms begin in adulthood, which makes it comparable to the childhood-onset Kocher-Debre-Semelaigne syndrome. It is caused by low levels of the thyroid hormones T3 and T4 together with an elevated level of thyroid-stimulating hormone. The record here is descriptive and is not medical advice.
