Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells, a type of white blood cell normally responsible for producing antibodies. Malignant plasma cells accumulate in the bone marrow, crowding out healthy blood cells and often producing an abnormal antibody protein that can damage the kidneys. Common effects include bone pain and fractures, anemia, and an increased susceptibility to infection.
