Lipoatrophy

Endocrine, Nutritional and Metabolic Diseases

Lipoatrophy is the localized loss of fat tissue beneath the skin. It can occur at sites of repeated subcutaneous injection, such as insulin injections used to treat diabetes, injections of human growth hormone, or injections of copaxone used to treat multiple sclerosis, sometimes leaving a visible dent at the injection site. It also occurs as part of HIV-associated lipodystrophy, where it can arise as an adverse reaction to certain antiretroviral medications.
