Heptadecaphobia is the fear of the number 17. The name comes from the Greek words for seventeen, dekaepta, and fear, phobos. In Italy the number 17 is considered ill-fated, and the date Friday the 17th is viewed as especially unfortunate. It is an ancient superstition, probably deriving from the fact that the Roman numeral XVII is an anagram of vixi, Latin for I have lived, which implies that the person is dead. It is similar in nature to the fear of the number 13 in Anglo-Saxon countries.
