Colorado Tick Fever

Infectious and Parasitic Diseases

Colorado tick fever is a viral infection transmitted by the bite of an infected Rocky Mountain wood tick. It is a distinct illness from the bacterial Rocky Mountain spotted fever, though the two share a region and part of a name, and it is thought to be the disease American pioneers once called mountain fever. The virus infects blood-forming cells, particularly red blood cells, which is why it can also spread through blood transfusion in addition to tick bites.
