HIV/AIDS in Zimbabwe is a major public health issue and has produced one of the largest recorded numbers of cases in Sub-Saharan Africa. Reports place the presence of the virus in the country at roughly forty years, although evidence suggests the spread may have begun earlier. In recent years the government has agreed to act and has adopted treatment target strategies. Progress is described as notable, with more people learning their status, receiving treatment and reaching viral suppression, and country progress reports show the epidemic declining and beginning to plateau. International organizations and the national government attribute this to increased condom use, fewer sexual partners, greater knowledge and support, and implementation of treatment strategies. Vulnerable populations disproportionately affected include women and children, sex workers and the LGBTQ+ population.
