Hydrocele

Diseases of the Genitourinary System

A hydrocele is an accumulation of serous fluid in a body cavity. A hydrocele testis, the most common form, is an accumulation of fluid around a testicle, often caused by fluid collecting within the tunica vaginalis, a layer derived from the peritoneum that wraps the testicle. Provided there is no hernia present, it typically resolves without treatment in the first year of life; although hydroceles usually develop in males, rare instances have been described in females in the canal of Nuck.
