Polyhydramnios is a medical condition describing an excess of amniotic fluid in the amniotic sac, seen in about one percent of pregnancies and typically diagnosed when the amniotic fluid index is greater than 24 centimeters. There are two clinical varieties: chronic polyhydramnios, where excess fluid accumulates gradually, and acute polyhydramnios, where excess fluid collects rapidly.
