Assisted reproductive technology, or ART, comprises the medical procedures used primarily to treat infertility, belonging to the field of reproductive endocrinology and infertility. It encompasses techniques such as in vitro fertilization, in which fertilization of egg and sperm occurs outside the body, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, and the cryopreservation of gametes and embryos, along with fertility medications, and when used to address infertility these technologies are commonly grouped together as fertility treatment. Some ART applications also serve genetic purposes through preimplantation genetic diagnosis, and the technology supports surrogacy arrangements as well, though not every surrogacy arrangement necessarily involves ART.

FAQs
Does assisted reproductive technology include intrauterine insemination?
Not by the CDC definition, which counts only procedures that handle eggs or embryos.
Not under the definition the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention uses. That definition covers fertility treatments or procedures in which eggs or embryos are handled to help achieve a pregnancy, such as in vitro fertilization, which is the most common type. It leaves out treatments in which only sperm are handled, such as intrauterine insemination, and procedures in which a woman takes drugs only to stimulate egg production. Other sources define the term more broadly, so the boundary depends on which definition is being used.
