Circumcision

Surgical Procedure

Circumcision is a surgical procedure that removes the foreskin from the human penis. In its most common form, the foreskin is extended with forceps, then a circumcision device may be placed, after which the foreskin is excised; topical or locally injected anesthesia is generally used to reduce pain and physiologic stress. It is undertaken for religious, cultural, social and medical reasons, and may be medically necessary in cases of phimosis, chronic urinary tract infections and other pathologies of the penis that do not resolve with other treatments. The procedure is contraindicated in cases of certain genital structure abnormalities or poor general health.

FAQs

When is circumcision offered for medical reasons?

Usually when other treatments have not worked, for example repeated infections or a tight foreskin that causes problems.

The National Health Service says circumcision is only available on the service for medical reasons, such as repeated infections or problems caused by a tight foreskin, and that it is usually only offered when other treatments have not worked or it is the only option. Examples it gives include repeated swelling, itching or soreness of the foreskin or head of the penis, a tight foreskin (phimosis) causing problems such as painful erections or difficulty peeing, and scarring or tightness that has led to problems. It may also be recommended as part of treatment for cancer of the penis, although this is rare.
