Dental Implant

Surgical Procedure

A dental implant is a prosthesis that interfaces with the bone of the jaw or skull to support a dental prosthesis such as a crown, bridge or denture, or to act as an orthodontic anchor. It relies on osseointegration, a biological process in which a material such as titanium or zirconia forms an intimate bond to the bone; the implant fixture is placed first and allowed to osseointegrate before the dental prosthetic is attached.

FAQs

How often do dental implants fail?

About 2.2 percent failed in one large national registry study; most of that was early failure before the prosthesis was fitted.

Failure is uncommon. A registry study of 158,824 dental implants placed in 53,874 patients in an Israeli health maintenance organization between 2014 and 2022 found an overall failure rate of 2.21 percent. Of that, 1.56 percent was early failure, meaning the implant did not bond to the bone during the osseointegration phase, before the prosthesis was attached. This is one population's record and not a guarantee for any individual patient.
