Gamete intrafallopian transfer, abbreviated GIFT, is a tool of assisted reproductive technology against infertility. Eggs are removed from a woman's ovaries and placed in one of the fallopian tubes along with the man's sperm; the technique, first attempted by Patrick Steptoe and Robert Edwards and later pioneered by endocrinologist Ricardo Asch, allows fertilization to take place inside the woman's own uterus.

FAQs
How is gamete intrafallopian transfer carried out?
It needs laparoscopic surgery under general anesthesia.
In this procedure the eggs and the sperm are injected together into the fallopian tubes using a surgical procedure called laparoscopy, and the doctor uses general anesthesia. A related procedure, zygote intrafallopian transfer, is similar but also uses in vitro fertilization, so the eggs are mixed with sperm in the laboratory first.
