How does the digestive system keep working after the stomach is removed?

Cleveland Clinic says the surgeon attaches the small intestine to what remains of the stomach or to the esophagus.

Cleveland Clinic states that during a gastrectomy the surgeon reconstructs the digestive system so that it still works. It gives two examples: if part of the stomach is removed, the surgeon attaches the small intestine to the remaining part of the stomach, and if the entire stomach is removed, the surgeon attaches the small intestine to the esophagus.
