Hair Transplantation

Surgical Procedure

Hair transplantation is a surgical technique that removes hair follicles from one part of the body, called the donor site, and moves them to a bald or balding part of the body, called the recipient site, and is used primarily to treat male pattern baldness. In this minimally invasive procedure, grafts containing hair follicles that are genetically resistant to balding, typically taken from the back of the head, are transplanted to the balding scalp; the technique can also restore eyelashes, eyebrows, beard, chest and pubic hair and fill in scars from accidents or previous surgery such as face lifts. Because hair naturally grows in groupings of one to four hairs, modern techniques harvest and transplant these follicular units in their natural groupings, a method called follicular unit transplantation, achieving a natural appearance by mimicking the original hair orientation; donor hair is harvested either by removing a strip of scalp or by follicular unit extraction, in which individual follicular units are removed one at a time.

FAQs

Is hair transplantation really scarless?

Neither method is scarless: the strip method leaves a linear scar and extraction leaves small pale marks.

No. The strip method, follicular unit transplantation, removes a strip of tissue from the back of the scalp and leaves a linear scar. Follicular unit extraction was developed to avoid that scar by harvesting individual units, but a review of the technique notes that its donor site still heals with small hypopigmented scars of about 1.5 to 1.6 millimeters across, so calling it scarless is a misnomer.
