Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy

Oncologic Therapy

Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, or HIPEC, is a type of hyperthermia therapy used in combination with surgery in the treatment of advanced abdominal cancers. In this procedure, warmed anti-cancer medications are infused and circulated in the peritoneal cavity, the abdomen, for a short period of time, with the chemotherapeutic agents generally infused during the procedure being mitomycin-C and cisplatin.

FAQs

What does a clinical review report about adding hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy to ovarian cancer surgery?

A PubMed Central review reports a randomized phase 3 trial with a significant survival benefit when it was added to interval cytoreductive surgery in patients not eligible for primary surgery.

A review of the procedure in ovarian cancer in the National Library of Medicine's PubMed Central archive reports that a randomized phase 3 trial showed a significant benefit in recurrence-free and overall survival when hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy was added to interval cytoreductive surgery in patients who were not eligible for primary surgery because of the extent of their disease. This summarizes what that review reports and is not medical advice.
